Mathew Day and business colleague James, a coaching session

A recent private coaching session with Keith Pope provided these two Hunstrete House guests with some fine sport during a 3 hours session on Bridge Pool.

Mathew (left) who had never fished before landed a 7lb plus carp and James weighed with a couple of 4/5 pounders.

KEITH POPE BATHAMPTON AA JUNIOR COACH.

Bathampton AA’s Junior Organiser, Keith Pope has picked up an award for services to angling in
the Chairman of Bath and North East Somerset Council Sports Awards.

A wide variety of sports were recognised at the presentation held at Bath’s Guildhall where Council Chairman Ian Dewey and Olympic sprinter Jason Gardener presented the awards.

Keith’s award was in recognition of his immense work for both Bathampton Angling Association and promoting the sport.

The Bath based angler has a remarkable CV.

He has spent 40 of his 47 years fishing all types of waters throughout the west country. He is an accomplished level 2 coach and at present leads a team of five qualified coaches and several other CRB checked helpers.

Keith took over as Head Coach five years ago since when he has made a huge success of the position.

Between March and December of each year he holds regular coaching sessions during which he shares his vast experience with both club members and non members alike. It is his policy to never turn away any youngster irrespective of ability. He even supplies tackle and bait for those who have none.

Keith also gives private tuition to anyone thinking of taking up the sport and invited me to attend a lesson he was giving the very next day on Withy Pool at Hunstrete.
 Account of a coaching session

Saturday was cold and windy with the occasional burst of bright sun. Water temperatures were well below ideal carp feeding conditions and to make conditions worse and even more uncomfortable for the anglers, it snowed - twice.

And about to experience a fishing lesson he would never forget was Dave Mellodew from Whitley near Melksham.

With ten years experience of sea fishing behind him and not much in the way of big fish to show for the time spent, he decided that the ideal 39th birthday present from his mother and father would be a 10 hour carp fishing lesson.

The lesson began at 7am sharp and was “hands on” from the start. He was taught how to tackle up and from then on everything was explained in detail as the day progressed.

Two rods were set up with a running ledger rig. To the end of each line was attached a Tiger Nut boilie filled PVA bag and a Tiger Nut boilie was the hook bait.

Next came a casting lesson. Ten years experience of casting heavy 9oz gripper leads was of little use at Withy Pool. Instead of the long powerful 150 yard casts that Mellodew was used to performing all that was needed was to gently lob the bait about 30 yards into the middle of the basin.

The bait settled, the line was allowed to sink before being tightened and the rod placing in the rest. However, no sooner had he slid the line through the bite alarm than it went off.

Within seconds a delighted beginner had picked-up the rod and struck into his first ever carp - a fighting fit 10-3-0 mirror. A perfect start to any lesson.

Mellodew said: “It was the biggest fish I had ever caught regardless of species. It was in beautiful condition and I immediately became hooked on carp fishing.”

The one thing money cant buy is experience. Pope knew that on a cold day the fish would be in the deeper water. He also knew where the deep water was, what bait the carp would probably take and how to present it properly.

Thirty five minutes later Mellodew netted a second mirror that weighed-in at 7-2-0. A common carp of 8-3-0 was landed about an hour later followed by one of 5lb and another weighing almost 6lb.

Pope said: “To try and explain everything would take longer than one lesson. Dave’s next move should be to watch other carpers fish and asking questions. There is plenty of help out there – all a beginner has to do is ask.”

One more 7 pounder came during the late afternoon followed by a brace of twelve pounders. The final result of a day’s master class with Keith Pope was 8 fish to 12lb. A brilliant introduction to carp fishing by anyone’s standard.

Pope continued: “Judging by the amount of tackle that anglers bring with them, anyone taking up carp fishing could be fooled into thinking it is expensive hobby. However, angling costs only as much as you want to, or can afford to spend on it.

“Sure, you can spend hundreds of pounds on tackle but you can also buy a one rod set up for as little as £100 – and that includes bait.

“A Bathampton AA tab would also be a good buy because there are plenty of carp weighing up to 34lb in Main Lake. And that should keep any newcomer busy for at least his first couple of years.”

Details of Bathampton AA and information on all its waters can be found on bathampton.org

Committee member Keith Pope and Bailiff Richard Patrick are seen releasing 200 4-6 inch barbel on the Island at Warleigh. Following a decision by the committee a further stocking of the same amount will take place for the next two years. Richard, a keen barbel angler noticed that there was a lack of small barbel and recommended to the committee that we should restock. Ever mindful of our responsibility to our fisheries it was decided to take action. In Richards own words 'when I am up there looking down seeing those fish being caught, I will be able to say with pride, that was down to me'. Presentation for long service
