“PROPER” FISHING ON THE RIVER CHEW Sun 28-Feb-2010 |
The Bathampton A.A stretch of the River Chew at Compton Dando is giving first class sport to the club members who prefer traditional-style river fishing.
With approximately one mile of water, fishing from the right hand bank side upstream of the road bridge, there are streamy reaches, deep holes and steady glides, and the angler has no idea what he is going to hook next.
Trotting with a small stick float using maggots, casters, bread flake, worms or sweetcorn as bait will account for chub, roach, perch, dace, grayling or brown trout.
The river is quite narrow in places - a typical “Mr. Crabtree” stream - but there are specimen size fish of most of the species mentioned above waiting to be caught, and it is a river well worth getting to know.
From a small tributary of the River Avon to the main river is quite a difference but the big pike being caught in the Newbridge to Saltford area are currently a big attraction.
Biggest reported in the last two weeks was a beauty weighing in at 23lbs 11ozs caught by a club member on mackerel.
The same angler had several more weighing up to six pounds on the same day .
Good numbers of pike to high teens are being caught on sprat as well as mackerel.
Members are reminded that the use of freshwater fish as bait , whether dead or alive, is banned.
